Crate Training: New owners need to always feed their kittens in a crate. Why?
Because a crate is your number one form of transportation. Feeding inside of the
crate will train the Serval cat to go inside with out question. Remember to reward
good behaviour.
1) Training an Exotic African Serval Cat
We are all familiar with “Pavlov’s dog”. Ring the bell every time you feed the dog, then you can ring the bell and the dog will still come even if there is no food. Serval cats are the same way. They learn from your habits and adapt accordingly. Example: Every day I feed from the same blue bowl for my Serval and a red bowl for my domestic cats. If one day I wash the blue bowl and feed the Serval in the red bowl she will sit and chirp thinking I still have the food in my hand because she is trained (with out knowing) to find the blue bowl. This is also how bad habits are formed. One should never physically hit a Serval cat should they disobey. This will trigger a fear response towards you and does absolutely nothing to help you. It will only work against you.
2) Common Commands: Exotic African Serval Cat
“Sit” or “come here” are the two most commonly taught commands. Work hard to teach them. Most Servals respond VERY well to hand signals followed by voice commands. Hand signals are also useful when a cat is in an excited state because noise cause more excitement.
